Contra Costa Health Services will hold a second free vaccination clinic this week during Concord’s Thursday Music and Market program in Todos Santos Plaza. The first clinic was so successful that organizers decided to add a second night.

I saw that last week! I was amazed, at first I thought it was the food line for Food not Bumbs. Then as I walked around the park with my iced tea cooler, I noticed it was the health dept!
I am also amazed that whooping cough is making a come back.
And ugh, it’s getting crowded downtown. I was going to start attending the concerts but screw that!
Whooping cough is making a comeback because some misinformed folks have decided that vaccines cause autism (er, no!) and refuse to vaccinate their kids – depending on everyone else’s herd-immunity to protect their children.
Lo and behold, whooping cough has been declared epidemic in California. A 100% preventable disease. *sigh*
britgeekgal: There are a wide variety of reasons why people do not vaccinate. My kids are vaccinated, but I’d just like to say that if you are going to be sassy about something, you might as well be informed yourself…whooping cough, i.e pertussis is part of the DTaP combo shot. It is, however, the MMR/MMVR shot that was once linked to autism in a small study that was later debunked by its own authors. Just sayin’
You nailed it britgeekgal. Thanks idiots, for putting me and mine in at risk.
Megatron – forgive me for oversimplifying in the name of brevity (can’t stand leaving essays on other ppl’s blogs).
Sad fact is that I have encountered far too many parents who have decided – based on the aforementioned bogus data – that ALL vaccines must be bad.
I wish I was joking.

Look at both sides. Get informed Then decide. Check out the National Vaccine Information Center.
According to WebMD, Marin County has a “relatively high rate of vaccine refusal.” Marin County also has the highest number of whooping cough cases.
It blows me away how no matter what, there is always going to be a few dense people out there who take the word of Oprah and/or Jenny McCarthy before that of actual scientists who have spent years and years of research studying this stuff in a laboratory.
informed mom-
Spending about 40 seconds on the NVIC site I found this disclaimer about their information, “When evaluating data from VAERS, it is important to note that for any reported event, no cause-and-effect relationship has been established.” Basically, all their claims are purely speculation and they have no actual data or testing that supports their “theories”.
I thought it was mandatory if you send your kid to public school to have proof of their vaccinations… or is it just certain ones? Not being a parent I don’t really have a clue what I’m talking about, but I remember as a kid having to get shots before starting school.
The whole idea of vaccines is that it’s an inconvenience that individuals endure for the benefit of all of society. The fuzzy thinkers on the fringe left view vaccines as “unnatural” or non-holistic, while the fringe right shakes in anger and fear at “socialism”. Neither group has any clue about either the science or the history behind what they oppose.
ConcordCatLady: Eh, you can get around it. All you really have to do is state moral and/or religious reasons for non-vaccination upon enrollment and that has to be honored ( in public school? I don’t know if private schools are the same). They cannot question you, that’s all you have to say, no real explanation is demanded.
Glad they are doing this, I will be stopping.
Speaking of things good folk should do…
Mr. Mayor, would you be so kind as to put up another story pertaining to the boon marrow drive for the Martinez Police Sergeant. I feel it should be put back at the top of the page.
Thank you so much.
Boon? Boon? What the hell is a boon marrow?
Make that bone marrow.
My God what was wrong with me?
I think I’ll stop getting a tetanus shot and enjoy the full effects of lockjaw.
