Bike thief caught on camera, can you identify this (alleged) criminal?

July 14, 2010 10:26 am · 70 comments

UPDATE: The photos have been removed since it’s been determined the man was taking back his own bike, which was stolen from him. Please click HERE for more on the story.

ORIGINAL STORY BELOW:

This man is wanted for (allegedly) stealing a $1,200.00 mountain bike from the Safeway store on Willow Pass Road on June 25th at about 4:15pm.

Captain Brian Wiesendanger with the Concord Police says the bike was locked up at the time of the crime….

According to the owner, the rear wheel was locked to the frame, so the rear wheel would not turn.  The suspect would have had to partially carry the bike.

Please have anyone who wishes to provide information contact Detective Greg Mahan, at 925-603-5814.

You can also email anonymous tips to mayor@claycord.com.

On a side note, is it just me, or does it look like his shirt has a John Muir Hospital logo on it?

2 Joshua Barron July 14, 2010 at 10:33 am

anyone recognized the logo on the shirt? it is probably where he works

3 Gary - Alpha Alarm July 14, 2010 at 10:34 am

Wow, nice to see some decent CCTV pics for once. Sad day when Safeway’s cameras are better than all the banks! Wish I could say I installed those ;-)

4 ouch July 14, 2010 at 10:37 am

This guy is SCREWED.

I’m sure the employer (logo on his shirt?) will be proud of the free advertising!

5 Anonymous July 14, 2010 at 10:39 am

Does he go to DVC?

6 Anonymous July 14, 2010 at 10:40 am

What’s his shirt say? It looks like a work shirt…

7 Anonymous July 14, 2010 at 10:41 am

Is he wearing a work shirt?

8 Mr. Mayor July 14, 2010 at 10:43 am

It looks like a shirt from John Muir Hospital, but I could be wrong.

9 Anonymous July 14, 2010 at 10:43 am

LOVE that this is posted online!!!
One example of internet benefits!
Come on people…PLEASE chime in and let’s bust this A**hole!

10 Mom July 14, 2010 at 10:47 am

Wonderful pictures! I hope they nab him quickly.

11 Anonymous July 14, 2010 at 10:48 am

Does it look like he has bolt cutters in his back pocket in the 1st picture?

12 Anonymous July 14, 2010 at 10:51 am

i have to agree with Mayor— looks like John Muir hospital logo

13 jtkatec July 14, 2010 at 10:51 am

What a poophead.

I don’t recognize him, but I shop there so I will keep my eye open

14 Anonymous July 14, 2010 at 10:51 am

I agree with mr. Mayor my first thought was john muir

15 anon July 14, 2010 at 11:03 am

I just talked to Chance’s mom…………happy to report it’s not him.
Hopefully made her a new reader of Claycord.

16 anon July 14, 2010 at 11:06 am

has anyone sent that picture to john muir? concord campus, which is near that safeway

17 Jed10 July 14, 2010 at 11:16 am

anon (1): it would be wise to hesitate before naming someone like that in a public forum without absolute certainty. Think about their privacy.

Gary – Alpha Alarm: I wouldn’t exactly call those hi-res images; VGA at most, unless they’ve been shrunk here. He’s just closer to the camera than is typical. Can’t even read the shirt logo at that distance.

18 Anonymous July 14, 2010 at 11:17 am

That is great. Looks like a pretty clean cut guy to pick up a bike and walk out the door. Scumbag… He will be found. I LOVE THIS BLOG!!!!

19 Anonymous July 14, 2010 at 11:19 am

Busted!
It does kind of look like JM logo – I forwarded this to some JM employee’s.

Check this logo:

“Captain Brian Wiesendanger with the Concord Police says the bike was locked up at the time of the crime….

THE BIKE WAS NOT LOCKED UP!!!

$1200 lesson learned. Case closed.

You can’t fix stupid.

21 Anonymous July 14, 2010 at 11:22 am

Have at it, there are two locations near that Safeway.

22 Cheryl July 14, 2010 at 11:23 am

That’s definitely a John Muir Health System logo, but it doesn’t necessarily mean he works at the hospital, or is an employee of John Muir health… may have a friend or family member that works there.

23 theomordha July 14, 2010 at 11:25 am

This should be a good first strike for this guy. Let us hope that he has a job so that he can reimburse the victim, the City and the County for all of the costs of dealing with his actions. If he cannot pay and if he is a minor then let us hope that the family is required to pay all of the costs. If the family cannot pay then his employer should take his wages and provide them. Do not go easily with this. Do not put him in jail. Get the cash.

24 Anonymous July 14, 2010 at 11:30 am

20 “REALITY”??? PLEASSSSEEEEEEEEE!

You’re the Clown. This fool will be caught. Stop BLAMING and Punishing the Victim.

Perhaps the Next time you slip up, someone will be there to seize the moment. KARMA right back at you.

25 9 deuce daisy July 14, 2010 at 11:32 am

He could have picked up the shirt at Goodwill, too. I hope he gets caught… jerk-o.

26 Anonymous July 14, 2010 at 11:35 am

#20 stealing is stealing whether it’s locked or not. did the bike belong to this loser pictured? NO. just because something is unlocked does not mean it is free for the taking. don’t try to justify criminals, it makes you look like one.

27 Anonymous July 14, 2010 at 11:41 am

Reality, “you can’t fix stupid”, best hope you are perfect in everyway and never make mistakes…..

28 Anonymous July 14, 2010 at 11:41 am

It is only a matter of time. Nail the thief.

29 Anonymous July 14, 2010 at 11:44 am

JOHN MUIR HEALTH
Extroardinary criminals everywhere you turn!

30 Anonymous July 14, 2010 at 11:52 am

Looks like the parking attendents

31 Reformed Two Striker July 14, 2010 at 12:04 pm

“This should be a good first strike for this guy”
Really? Strikes are for violent crimes. I am not seeing any violence here.

32 Ian July 14, 2010 at 12:16 pm

You can’t fix people like #20.
It would be nice, but they just keep breeding.

33 BusBoy July 14, 2010 at 12:17 pm

My guess… hes a valet @ JM. For some reason I remember those shirts.

34 Anonymous July 14, 2010 at 12:18 pm

If he is actually an employee of JM I would fire the guy.

35 BusBoy July 14, 2010 at 12:27 pm

@ Cheryl #22 LOL… right no self respecting man would go in public with a shirt that color and in dockers!

This guy will be ID’d before the day is out.

36 Anonymous July 14, 2010 at 12:29 pm

Nice way to wear sun glasses

37 ConcordCatLady July 14, 2010 at 12:34 pm

Oh this guy is so busted! It’s on the CC Times website too!

38 Anonymous July 14, 2010 at 12:34 pm

he is a parking lot attendant Have CPD contact human resources at JMH concord campus

39 Me July 14, 2010 at 12:41 pm

Doesn’t even look like chance u idiot. Also Chance doesn’t steal shit.

40 Anon July 14, 2010 at 12:45 pm

Anon 30: Totally! I drive down High School Ave every morning and that certainly rings a bell. If he’s not a parking attendant at JMH, he’s sure as hell dressed like one. I hope CPD has contacted JM Concord.

41 KenInConcord July 14, 2010 at 12:46 pm

It cracks me up that we have to say “(alleged)”.

Because the guy in the photo that picked up the bike and walked away, might not actually be the guy in the photo that picked up the bike and walked away.

KenInConcord … Or am I?

42 Reality knocking...again July 14, 2010 at 12:51 pm

If I left my bike “locked” like that, at SOME POINT it would have occurred to me that this probably wasn’t going to do any good if someone really wanted to take my property. I know, I know…he was only gone for 5 minutes!
I lock my car doors, I lock my house doors, I lock up my bike (through the frame and BOTH tires) and I don’t leave valuables in the back of my truck.
If I get jacked I curse the SOB who stole my stuff. However, if I lock it up half-ass and it gets stolen, or if I leave the car with my purse on the front seat for “just 2 minutes” with the window rolled down and it gets stolen…I DON’T go crying to claycord.com that someone stole my stuff.
You people replying have seen enough stories on here to know criminals exist. Take PRECAUTIONS and don’t relay on others to protect your valuables. I’m not sticking up for this guy, but put some accountability where it belongs as well, on the property owner.

Last time I checked this was Claycord, not Mayberry.

Adjust accordingly.

43 Cowellian July 14, 2010 at 12:51 pm

I’m fine with hanging horse thieves, bike thieves, and car thieves.

44 Anonymous July 14, 2010 at 12:52 pm

Hey Mayor, I say we start a betting pool that people get to say how long after you post a pic or story someone is arrested for the crime. I give this guy 3 days.

45 Mike #18 July 14, 2010 at 12:54 pm

#20 he was trying to keep the honest people honest.

The picture “allegedly” shows stupid is as stupid does.

46 Anonymous July 14, 2010 at 12:58 pm

I give him 3 hours!

47 Anonymous July 14, 2010 at 1:00 pm

Yeah, a lot of people (especially those who think their upper crust community is immune to crime) are extremely careless. However, that doesn’t make it okay to steal! Bust the prick!

48 Drvrdadca July 14, 2010 at 1:03 pm

Hey I think I know this guy. he looks just like #20. What an idiotic comment.

I wonder if this fool knows the CVHS criminals busted in Clayton today.

49 Mr Funbunny July 14, 2010 at 1:05 pm

I don’t like police brutality but if this guy fell down a few flights of stairs or tripped when he got arrested I wouldn’t mind.

50 Anonymous July 14, 2010 at 1:15 pm

You think locking the bike up outside would have made a difference – through the frame and both wheels? It’s almost easier to cut the lock (any lock) and walk away with it, than having the balls to walk into a crowded store and carry a bike out.

51 Anonymous July 14, 2010 at 1:30 pm

In the first photo, is the guy in the white T-shirt looking out for him? Second photo you can see the shoulder of maybe the same someone with a white T-shirt on directly in front of bike stealer dude…….

52 anonamom July 14, 2010 at 1:37 pm

Heavy left rear pocket. Are they also missing some bolt cutters?

53 Mr. Mayor July 14, 2010 at 1:42 pm

On the left of his shirt it says “plant services”, and on the right it says John Muir Health. Thanks to the person who emailed the tip, and the photo!

54 Family guy July 14, 2010 at 1:44 pm

He looks like a giant chicken.

55 anon July 14, 2010 at 1:45 pm

WHAT A DUMBASS!

56 anonymous July 14, 2010 at 1:45 pm

My wife works at John Muir Concord and said she couldn’t tell if that was their logo from the quality of the photo. She also said the parking lot attendants work for a company called TLG and they don’t wear the John Muir logo on their shirts (yellow rectangular logo with TLG on it)

57 anonymous July 14, 2010 at 1:46 pm

My wife who works at JM Concord says the plant services folks wear blue at the Concord Campus. Must be a Walnut Creek employee

58 Anonymous July 14, 2010 at 1:47 pm

So Mr. Mayor has John Muir – Plant Services been contacted? I am assuming he works at the hospital down the street-

59 Anonymous July 14, 2010 at 1:49 pm

If He still has the bike, He’s probably thinking of any creative way to give it back. He’ll claim someone was trying to steal it and He saved it for the owner LOL.
If He already sold it off – He’s Screwed!

60 SanDee July 14, 2010 at 1:49 pm

#41
Thanks for the smile :-) That was funny.

61 Mr. Mayor July 14, 2010 at 1:49 pm

CPD has been told. I’m hearing they are there now checking out the tip.

62 Mr. Mayor July 14, 2010 at 1:50 pm

The plant services guys at 2700 grant wear red.

63 shells July 14, 2010 at 1:52 pm

For those investegating this crime, the first photo looks like he has a lanyard hanging out of his pocket. Could be work keys. Does the shirt resemble 24 Hour Fitness employee polos? Bet the bike is on sale on Craig’s List.
Guess you can call all of us the CSI Unit of Claycord!

64 Anonymous July 14, 2010 at 2:00 pm

#42 First of all it isn’t legal to steal is it? We have every right to try and get our property returned. Claycord is so helpful when the system fails aka stealing.

65 Anonymous July 14, 2010 at 2:06 pm

#42, If you are correct then people won’t care about someone’s bike being stolen and nothing will happen, he will not be caught.
However, Most people think it’s wrong to take something that is NOT yours – He’ll be caught. (because it is wrong).
I am my Brothers keeper.

66 Anonymous July 14, 2010 at 2:08 pm

Maybe they should have a “Bait bike” episode in Claycord.

67 Aunt Bee July 14, 2010 at 2:18 pm

Reality- It was stealing because he took it and it wasn’t his.

My husband’s bike was stolen from the PH BART. It was in the very first slot by the taxi stand and closest to that little market. I guess it was easier to get to than the ones in the middle of the rack.

68 Anonymous July 14, 2010 at 5:04 pm

Ahh Claycord, gotta love it. At least we learned what the term “alleged” means.

Well gotta go burn my neighbor, she collects garden gnomes, must be a witch.

69 jtkatec July 15, 2010 at 11:11 am

Anon 68, you are TOO funny!!!

70 Anonymouse July 16, 2010 at 9:17 pm

Turns out you are all wrong and he was just taking what was rightfully his. He had the bike stolen months earlier and by chance found it in the store. Get your fact straight before u start making accusations about people and things you know nothing about.
